The Center started seismology research using recordings of analog one or multi component Russian seismometres installed in Erzurum in early 1990’s. Starting with the year 1998, 10 broad band 3-component modern digital seismometres and 2-digital accelerometres have been purchased in parties using the funds provided by the Rector’s Office. Our seismographs have been installed directly on bedrock, all around Eastern Anatolia from North-Eastern most positions at Posof and Akyaka to Uzumlu in Erzincan on the West in modern and technically correct station buildings. The recordings are of very good quality with noise being below the worldwide accepted lower limits.
The Center receives real time continuous seismic signals from 26 regional (including 10 own) and 70 global broad band stations, hence locate all world wide earthquakes of magnitude greater than 4.5 using the licensed automatic event location program SEISCOMP.
The staff at the center also locates local (< 600 km), regional (<1500 km) and global events recorded by or own seismic network using SEISAN system of programs running under LINUX. After locating, the size of local earthquakes are given by computing the Richter (Ml) and moment (Mw) magnitudes, whereas the size of distant and regional earthquakes are given in terms of body wave (mb, mB) or surface wave (MS) magnitudes. For some important local events focal mechanism solutions are also produced.
The sets of seismology software we own are sufficient to conduct almost every research in earthquake engineering and seismology. We also keep and maintain all recorded earthquake event information since 1900 in our database system.
Our center makes every effort to improve the current seismic recording network by new installments and to procure other technology to follow seismic activity bu measuring alternative parameters.
