WINTER TOURISM AND WINTER
SPORTS IN ERZURUM
Erzurum, with its 5-month long ski period, snow quality, long tracks and facilities, is one of the most important winter tourism centers in the world.
Palandoken, Konaklı, and Kandilli are three ski centers in the city. ın addition, it has many top-end equipped facilities such as curling, ice hockey, ice skate and short track facilities. Ski jumping towers are important ones in the world with both their quality and shape.
PALANDOKEN SKI CENTER
One of the Turkey's most important ski centers, Palandöken Mountain is an international station with regard to freestyle skiing and winter tourism and is one of the new attraction centers for winter tourism in Turkey and in the world.
It is one of the longest and the steepest tracks and has 2000-3176 attitude difference. There are 7 easy , 8 professional, and 4 natural tracks and in those tracks there are 10 ski lifts, 1 tele ski, 2 baby lift, and 1 gondola lift. Gondola lift climbs 1000 meters and reaches Ejder peak.
Beside snowboard and alpine skiing, the ski center is appropriate for paragliding, alpinism, snow tube, and paintball. There is also an International Ski Federation (FIS)- registered track for big tournaments. 12 thousand people can ski simultaneously in all tracks. There is an avalanche control system to prevent any possible avalanches. There are several hotels in the center including 2 five-star, a four-star, a three-star and a two star hotels. Bed capacity in private and state facilities is 2681 in total. There are many two/three- star hotels also in the city Centre. The center is 15 km away from the airport and only 4 km away from the city center.
Konaklı ski center is on the Erzurum –Çat road and is 22 km away from the city center. It is set on 460-hectare area with 2200-3185 meter attitude difference. As the slope ratio differs, it serves skiers at every level. There are 16 tracks in Konaklı and can serve 16 thousands skiers.
To meet the needs for athletes and visitors, there are booking and selling offices, cafeterias, restaurants, resting and service units.
KANDILLI SKI CENTRE
The tracks are founded on a 160-hectare area and the attitude changes between 1.713 and 1.767. Kandilli ski center is a multi-purpose center thorough the year. It includes Kandilli Cross Country Skiing Sports Centre; 2,5 km, 3,75 km, and 5 km blue and red tracks; two ( 1,6 km and 1,3 km) sprint tracks, cross country skiing stadium, tournament and administration building, cabins for each team, ski testing area, warm up area, audience area, VIP tent and other areas. Sprint track is 1.297 meter long, 9-12 meter wide and has 22 meters attitude difference. It is 36 km away from the city center.
SKI JUMPING TOWERS
It has become one of the symbols of Erzurum with its 125-meter length and crescent –like shape. The center includes two jumping towers, two jumping ramps, and three training ramps. The highest jumping hill in the towers is 1995 meters above sea level and the lowest one is 1902 meters above sea level.
The center has 5 curling competition areas and 1000 sitting capacity and is open to use throughout the year. The center is used especially for training the young generation for winter sports. It includes a room for the referee, the jury, the chief referee, and the technical delegate each and four halls for the athletes.
ICE HOCKEY ARENA
There are two separate arenas for women and for men. The arena for men has a capacity for 2000 audiences. It measures 60 meters × 30 meters and the arena for women has the capacity of 500 audiences and measures 60 meters × 30 meters.
ICE SKATE ARENA
The arena is open to the public and hosts many competitions with 2000 audience capacity. It includes changing rooms, resting rooms, a medical room, doping control room and personnel, jury and technical panel rooms.
SHORT TRACK ARENA
The arena measures 30 meters × 60 meters and has the capacity of 500 audiences. It includes changing rooms, resting rooms, a medical room, doping control room, and personnel, jury and technical panel rooms.
Erzurum is a mountainous city; 64% of its land consists of mountains, so it’s quite suitable for outdoor sports with its 3000-metre high attitudes, valleys, rivers, lakes, geological formations, steep cliffs, mountain chains, and highlands. It has a unique potential for trekking, alpinism, mountain biking, jeep safari, rafting, canoeing, hand-line fishing, hunting and paragliding. It also a visual feast for outdoor athletes with its unique landscapes.
ECO-AGRO AND ACTIVE TOURISM
Erzurum is an undiscovered paradise for nature tourism. It is the city of a visual feast with its deep valleys, rich bird and butterfly diversity, wildlife with grizzly bears and wildcats, colorful flora with many endemic species, mountain chains, glacial lakes, fairy chimneys, rivers and waterfalls.
THERMAL AND HEALTH TOURISM
Erzurum is one of the most important thermal tourism facilities with its thermal spring area. Thermal springs in Pasinler, Ilıca, and Köprüköy are remedies for many illnesses such as gastric, renal, gastrointestinal, and rheumatic illnesses. More than 170 thermal springs are discovered in and around Erzurum. There is a thermal hotel and thermal spring in Pasinler and Aziziye, mud pits in Köprüköy, and many primeval facilities in Akdağ, Arzuti, Meman (Tekman), Hamzan(Tekman), Çimenözü (Çat), and Hızırilyas (Horasan).
