OBESITY POLYCLINIC ESTABLISHED AT ATATÜRK UNIVERSITY RESEARCH HOSPITAL

The Obesity Polyclinic was established in Atatürk University Research Hospital in order to deal with obesity, which has increased greatly in the world in recent years and has become an important problem in our country, in more detail and to help patients with various treatment methods.

Obesity, which is a type of disease that occurs as a result of excessive and abnormal fat accumulation in the body, which results from the fact that the energy taken for a long time is more than the energy consumed, threatens human health.

Atatürk University Research Hospital, which cares about the weight problem in our country and region, opened the Obesity Polyclinic in order to provide a better quality health service to overweight and obese patients in order to find a solution to this problem.

In the outpatient clinic, which will focus on rational and sustainable preventive medicine practices aimed primarily at the whole society in order to combat obesity, the services are provided by an experienced team consisting of an internal medicine endocrinology specialist, general surgery specialists experienced in bariatric surgery and a dietitian.

Along with Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery, Professor. Dr. Müfide Nuran Akçay, Surgeon General Assoc. Dr. Erdem Karadeniz and Assist. Prof. Murat KARTAL  a team consisting of endocrine and dietitian control the patients in the polyclinic where they are, then, evaluated by the multidisciplinary team and directed to surgical treatment, while patients who are not suitable for surgery are referred to diet and medical treatment.

According to the data of the World Health Organization, 1.9 billion of 7 billion people in the world are overweight and 650 million people are obese. Dr. Müfide Nuran Akçay emphasized that 56% of the adult population over the age of 15 in our country is overweight.

Stating that diet and exercise are important against obesity, Akçay said that people who cannot lose weight with diet and exercise, who have co-morbid complaints and problems such as obesity-related hypertension, cardiovascular, type 2 diabetes, joint and sleep acne, are operated under appropriate conditions.

Stating that they will help obese patients to lose weight with the help of specialist endocrinologists and dietitians, Akçay thanked Rector Prof. Dr. Ömer Çomaklı  and those with a share in the process.
