Rector Hacımüftüoğlu: "Patents are a Critical Component of Scientific Competition"
Professor Dr. Ahmet Hacımüftüoğlu, the Rector of Atatürk University, made the following statements during the ceremony to underscore the critical role of intellectual and industrial property rights in scientific competition: "As you are aware, intellectual and industrial property rights are ownership rights that are acquired to prevent the unauthorised production, use, and trade of developed products by third parties." Nevertheless, the matter should not be solely analysed from a legal standpoint. Today, patents are the primary means by which the world's largest economies compete in the scientific sector. Standard-based patents have emerged as one of the most critical indicators of a nation's economic and technological prowess. in particular.
We are continuing to take steps to support our 'Local and National Technology' initiative as a university.
It is imperative that we acknowledge the critical significance of the time factor at this juncture. A specific procedure is necessary for the registration of a patent. Consequently, the applications we submit today not only benefit the present but also the future of our nation. As per 2023 global data, the total number of patent applications filed globally has exceeded 3.5 million. He stated that China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Germany are the leaders in this field. "Despite the challenges faced by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, our nation is also making substantial strides annually."
According to Rector Hacımüftüoğlu, the patent studies conducted by Atatürk University are of significant significance in demonstrating the university's pioneering role in this field and the productivity of its scientists. "As a university, we continue to take steps that support our 'Local and National Technology' initiative." In order for the Turkish Century vision to be truly successful in the field of science and technology, we must exert more effort and generate a greater amount of intellectual and industrial property rights. Prof. Dr. Muhammed Zeki Durak, the President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, and all those who contributed to their participation are to be thanked as we proceed on our journey with this awareness.
President Durak said, "Universities are essential for the commercialisation of scientific discoveries."
The President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, Prof. Dr. Muhammed Zeki Durak, was another speaker at the ceremony. He underscored the necessity for the academic community to forge a more effective relationship with industrial property rights. He stated, "Patents are not only a measure of individual accomplishments, but also a critical instrument for the economic development of nations." Industrial property rights are currently employed as a strategic competitive advantage by large corporations and governments worldwide. Universities are among the most critical stakeholders in this process. It is insufficient to publish the information generated in the academic realm solely in scientific articles. The commercialisation of this information and its application to the benefit of society are of paramount importance. The integration of scientists into industrial property processes and the encouragement of patent applications are of paramount importance at this juncture.
"Atatürk University Has Achieved a Significant Status in the Patent Process"
Rector Prof. Dr. President Durak stated that Atatürk University, under the leadership of Ahmet Hacımüftüoğlu, has recently increased its patent applications by acting with this awareness and has reached an important position throughout Turkey: "In a city like Erzurum, which is outside of large industrial zones, the fact that academic innovation has come to the forefront shows the vision and success of the university." I am confident that the academicians present today will engage in initiatives that will make a significant contribution to the technology production of Turkey in the future. I extend my congratulations to the scientists who have received awards and hope that the event organised on this occasion will be beneficial to the field of science.
