ATATÜRK UNIVERSITY IS RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE 250 MOST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY UNIVERSITIES IN THE WORLD.
Atatürk University has achieved substantial success by being recognized as one of the 250 greenest universities in the world in the 2024 Green University Index, a testament to the significance it places on sustainability and environmentally friendly initiatives. Atatürk University has been included in the list of universities that have distinguished Turkey in the international arena, as announced this year within the framework of the "Climate Friendly Campus" initiative, which is sponsored by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).
The universities listed are distinguished by their environmental awareness and sustainability-oriented projects, as evidenced by the Green University Index's evaluations in categories such as energy and climate change, waste management, water resources, transportation, and education-research. A total of 118 universities from Turkey were included in the evaluation, which included 1500 universities from 95 countries. Of these, 45 were ranked in the top 500, and 19 were ranked in the top 250.

Atatürk University Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hacımüftüoğlu underscored that the university's success is a direct consequence of its dedication to environmentally friendly initiatives and its comprehension of campus administration that prioritizes the preservation of the environment. Rector Hacımüftüoğlu stated, "At Atatürk University, we are committed to being a leader in the fields of education, environmental awareness, and sustainability." Our campus is a model for both our students and society due to its nature-compatible infrastructure, which includes large verdant areas, energy efficiency projects, zero waste applications, and bicycle paths. The academic and administrative personnel, as well as our students, have all contributed to this success. Our objective is to further elevate our position in the rankings in the years ahead and to reinforce our sustainability initiatives by enhancing them.
One of the most environmentally friendly campuses in Turkey
Atatürk University, which boasts a total of 33 million square meters of open space, has effectively implemented an environmentally friendly campus model. This model includes 7 million square meters of living space and 1 million square meters of indoor space. Facilities that cater to a wide range of requirements are available on the campus, including health and sports centers, retail malls, bicycle paths, and walking areas. Atatürk University is a model for environmental awareness among other universities, as evidenced by its energy-saving initiatives, environmental infrastructure, and zero waste applications, which qualify it for inclusion in the Green University Index.
The success of Atatürk University has once again illustrated its contribution to the sustainability vision of Turkey and the institution. In the future, the university will persist in its efforts to promote environmental awareness by sustaining its green campus initiatives.
