ATATÜRK UNIVERSITY ESTABLISHES ITS STATUS AS A PATENT CHAMPION  PATUD PROJECT WILL TRANSFORM REGISTERED PATENTS INTO PRODUCTS

Atatürk University has become one of the most innovative higher education institutions in Turkey, garnering attention through its national and international patent successes.

 - In an effort to commercialize its inventions, Atatürk University has implemented a novel strategy. The Research Project on the Transformation of Registered Patents into Products (PATÜD), which was initiated under the leadership of Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hacımüftüoğlu, is designed to facilitate the conversion of registered patents into products by engaging with the industry. The objective of this innovative paradigm, which is predicated on the collaboration between universities and industries, is to convert scientific production into economic value.

 The 2024 patent performances of universities operating in Turkey were analyzed in the "Patent Champion Universities" classification, in which Atatürk University achieved remarkable success.

 Atatürk University achieved a high ranking in various categories of the Top 20 lists, which were compiled by determining the number of patent applications and registrations in Turkey (TR), Europe (EP), the United States (US), and internationally (PCT) on a university basis. The rankings were established based on the quantity of patents that had been published or registered as of December 31, 2024.

 International Patent Applications (PCT)

 Atatürk University, which ranked first in 2024 international (PCT) patent applications with 52 applications, made a significant advancement in this discipline. The university maintained its international reputation by securing the second position with a total of 144 PCT applications.

 Patent Applications and Registrations in Turkey (TR)

 In 2024, Atatürk University held the fourth position in the number of Turkish (TR) patent applications, with 105 applications. It occupied the ninth position in the list of patents registered in 2024, with 15 patents. These findings demonstrated the university's commitment to safeguarding its innovative works.

 European Patent Applications and Registrations

 It was the 12th most frequently registered patent in the European Patent (EP) database, with three patents. This category is crucial for demonstrating the university's competitive edge in the global market.

 Patent Applications and Registrations in the United States (US)

 It was rated fourth in the 2024 ranking of universities with US (US) patents registered, with three patents registered. It was rated 10th in the general patent ranking of the United States (US) with 19 applications and 12th in the general registration ranking with 5 registrations. The global significance of Atatürk University was revealed by this success in the US market.

 General Ranking (Total Patent Applications)

 Atatürk University was the fifth most successful institution in Turkey in terms of total patent applications (TR) with 325 applications, and it was the seventeenth most successful institution in terms of total registrations with 39 registrations. This outcome underscored the university's status as one of the most innovative educational institutions in Turkey.

 Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hacımüftüoğlu, the Rector of Atatürk University, underscored in his statement regarding the rankings that the university is proud of its accomplishments. Atatürk University's determination and fortitude in the field of scientific research and innovation have been once again demonstrated by these results, according to Rector Hacımüftüoğlu. Our academics and researchers dedicate themselves to the development of innovative solutions that address the requirements of our nation and the global community. Specifically, our global competitiveness is demonstrated by our first-place ranking in international (PCT) patent applications.

 Rector Hacımüftüoğlu also expressed their intention to increase the number of registered patents, stating, "Our application numbers are quite high, but we will intensify our efforts to achieve more success in registration processes." This process is significantly influenced by the Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Office that we have established within our university. We will persist in providing assistance to our academic colleagues during the patent application and registration processes.

 Hacımüftüoğlu also highlighted the university's diverse projects, stating, "Our patent portfolio is enriched by the projects we conduct in various fields, including medicine, engineering, agriculture, and social sciences." We will further this achievement in the years ahead and enhance our contributions to Turkey's innovation ecosystem.

 The transformation of patents into actual products: Commencement of the PATÜD Project

 Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hacımüftüoğlu, the Rector of Atatürk University, announced the commencement of a new initiative to convert the university's scientific output into economic value. In his statement on the subject, Hacımüftüoğlu stated, "Our objective is for the patents that are developed and registered at our university to not only be on the shelves, but also to interact with the industry and become commercial." We have initiated the Research Project on the Transformation of Registered Patents into Products (PATÜD) within this scope to support the incorporation of R&D-based inventions into prototyping, product development, and production processes. PATÜD is a strategic initiative that seeks to convert the scientific expertise of Atatürk University into economic output. Our goal with this initiative is to establish a sustainable and innovative model for university-industry collaboration.

 Prof. Dr. Hacımüftüoğlu underscored the importance of universities not only as institutions that generate knowledge but also as entities that convert this knowledge into value. He also declared that the PATÜD Project will make tangible contributions to Turkey's development objectives.

 Atatürk University's objective is to elevate its patent count and establish itself as a global leader in both Turkey and beyond. The university administration has disclosed that it is currently developing new incentive programs and collaboration projects to enhance the innovation capabilities of students and academics. Additionally, it was announced that additional measures will be implemented to enhance collaboration with industry and expedite the commercialization of patents.

 The success of Atatürk University was met with tremendous satisfaction in Erzurum and throughout Turkey. There is a likelihood that the university will continue to establish itself as a leader in the field of innovation.
