The UI GreenMetric World Universities Ranking Index 2022 results, which evaluates world universities according to their sustainability efforts in the categories of Building and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste Management, Water Management, Transportation and Education and Research, have been announced. Accordingly, Atatürk University was ranked 324th among the 1050 world universities that entered the ranking, rising 119 places compared to the previous year, and ranked 24th among 83 universities in Türkiye 65 of which are state and 18 are private universities.

In the 6 main categories highlighted above, the IU GreenMetric network (UI Greenmetric World University Rankings), which aims to create global awareness on environmental awareness and participated by prestigious universities from all over the world, examines universities in the light of various indicators and monitors sustainability with a total of 6 basic categories and 51 scoring indicators. evaluates them at the international level according to their efforts.

The Rising On The Way To Become A Green Campus Continues

During the application process to the UI GreenMetric World Universities Ranking System, the collection, calculation and entry of the evidence of Atatürk University into the system was carried out under the leadership of the Environmental Problems Application and Research Center Directorate, and a road map was determined to move the current place in the ranking even higher, according to the results obtained. Center Director Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ceylan commented on the result of 2022 as follows: “It is obvious that we have made a good progress by surpassing 119 universities as a result of 2022 applications, to the extent that we can eliminate our shortcomings with respect to 2021. In order to be a sustainable green campus, we will continue to work uninterruptedly until we reach the full score in all 6 categories that have a direct impact on the total score. I would like to thank everyone who contributed, especially Prof. Dr. rector Ömer Çomaklı who has not spared us material and moral support at every stage of this process.”

Emphasizing that it is inevitable to take global measures against climate change and that both individual and institutional steps should be taken immediately, Atatürk University Rector Prof. Dr. Ömer Çomaklı stated that, as Atatürk University, they have never left out such a vital issue from their agenda and said: “It is of great importance to take urgent actions against this situation at all levels of social life and institutions. As a university, we are constantly organizing informative programs on this subject, and we are taking steps to raise awareness among our students and staff. We are also happy to see the results of the work we have done for our campus, with the rise we have achieved in the rankings.”

Rector Çomaklı stated that Atatürk University continues its activities in order to contribute to the higher education of the country, especially in the city and region where it is located, in terms of education, research and community service, adding: "We also carry out important activities for the improvement and dissemination of environmentally friendly practices. In the IU GreenMetric ranking, our aim is to ensure that our university, which has one of the most beautiful campuses in the world, is among the top 100 universities. "Turkish Universities Have Started to Record Serious Successes"

Explaining that they closely follow the well-known and recognized ranking institutions in the world, the President of the Council of Higher Education Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, on the other hand, talked about the published Green Universities Ranking: "According to the announced Green University Index, 70 universities are among the top 1000 universities. In the 2021 Green University Index, a total of 37 universities, 29 state and 8 foundations, are in the top 500.
