BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MEETING ORGANISED AT ATATÜRK UNIVERSITY
In the breast cancer awareness month celebrated by Atatürk University with various activities throughout October, the Breast Cancer Awareness Meeting prepared by the Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery was held.
In the program held in the Blue Hall of the Culture Centre, women were advised to apply to screening programmes in order to detect breast cancer at an early stage, and information about all stages of breast cancer from diagnosis to treatment was given by the relevant clinics.
In the meeting moderated by Prof. Dr. Müfide Nuran Akçay, Prof. Dr. Durkaya Ören, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erdem Karadeniz, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahar Yılmaz Çankaya, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Durkaya Ören, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Kartal, Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Burak Erdemci, Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr Seda Başak and Spc. Dr Aykut Turhan gave a speech and gave information about the stages and treatment of breast cancer.
Emphasising that cancer is an important public health problem, Prof. Dr. Müfide Nuran Akçay stated that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in the world and in our country.

Stating that a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes in the world and a patient dies every 11 minutes, Akçay said "The incidence rate of breast cancer increases by 2 per cent every year. In 2020, 2 million new cases of breast cancer were detected in the world. According to 2020 data, 22,500 new cases of breast cancer were added in Turkey. Breast cancer, which accounts for 30 per cent of female cancers, causes 20 per cent cancer-related loss of life. In the Screening Programme for Early Diagnosis of Breast Cancer; Breast self-examination every month in women younger than 20 years of age, breast self-examination every month and doctor's examination every 3 years in women between the ages of 20-40, mammography at the age of 40 in women after 40, breast self-examination every month, doctor's examination every year and mammography every year are required. This disease, which can be seen in one in every 8 women throughout life, can be detected at an early stage in 85 per cent of screenings. If diagnosed early, it can be treated at a rate of 98 per cent."
At the end of the meeting, questions from the audience were answered by the experts and various recommendations were made.
