146TH YEAR OF THE DEFENCE OF AZIZIYE COMMEMORATED WITH PRAYERS
Atatürk University Rector Prof. Dr. Ömer Çomaklı attended the ceremony organised for the 146th anniversary of Aziziye Defence, in which the people of Erzurum, especially Nene Hatun, wrote a heroic epic in the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878, called the 93 War.
While the Aziziye Epic, which has become traditional with the intense participation of Erzurum residents and students, continues to be celebrated with many activities, prayers were said and flags were waved in the programme organised by Erzurum Governorship and Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality.
The 146th anniversary programme of the heroic epic written by the people in the Aziziye Bastion, which was built on Top Mountain in 1872 by Sultan Abdülaziz under the direction of Fosfor Mustafa Pasha in order to keep the Erzurum-Kars highway under control in order to prevent the Russian threat, was attended by the city's civil, administrative, bureaucracy, judiciary and military officials, as well as many students and citizens.
The programmes, which started with the reading of the salaah from Ayazpaşa Mosque and then the historical call, continued with the reading of the flag poem and Sultan Abdulhamid II's edict, the voice of Sultan Abdulhamid II's letter of thanks to the people of Erzurum, the representative portrayal of Nene Hatun, the recitation of the Holy Qur'an and the recitation of prayers after the Silence of Respect and the National Anthem. The programme continued with the visit to Nenehatun's grave and the laying of carnations and ended with the performance of the Metropolitan Municipality mehteran team.
