Rector Çomaklı: "We Can Successfully Build Our Future By Knowing Our Past"

In the 1877-78 Ottoman-Russian War, known as the "War of 93", after the call of the muezzin of the Ayazpaşa Mosque, Abdullah Efendi, who went up to the mosque's minaret after the morning prayer, and after the call he made, the people of Erzurum came together with the knuckles, picks and shovels in their hands and rushed to the Aziziye Bastion to the Turkish soldier who fought against the Russians. Emphasizing that the enemy was defeated thanks to his help, Atatürk University Rector Prof. Dr. Ömer Çomaklı stated that they attach great importance to such activities in order to witness the epic written by the heroine Nene Hatuns, who left her baby in the swaddling clothes and said motherland first, and never forget what happened.

Noting that they frequently organize similar programs as a university in order to preserve national unity and integrity, Çomaklı said: “We should not forget that we can successfully build our future by knowing our past well. Aziziye Epic is also of great importance for us in this respect. I commemorate with gratitude all our heroes who helped us live freely today by writing a heroic epic, and I wish mercy from the Almighty God to our martyrs who fell to the ground for the defense of our homeland for a thousand years.

The program ended with the protocol members planting saplings in the memorial forest created in the redoubt.
