WORLD SOIL DAY WAS CELEBRATED WITH AN EVENT HOSTED BY THE FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE
Atatürk University Faculty of Agriculture hosted a special programme for 5 December World Soil Day.
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Canbolat, Head of the Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, who made the opening speech of the event held at the Faculty of Agriculture Conference Hall, stated that the employees of the soil science community are the voice of the silent soil, and emphasised that the soil is a sacred asset and the importance of proper management of the soil, which is the food production environment, by protecting it.
In his speech on Soil and Society, Prof. Dr. Müdahir Özgül, Lecturer at the Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, stated that agriculture is a culture, that soil is the most important part of this culture, that soil has hosted countless civilisations from the past to the present, and that civilisations that could not maintain the culture of soil management perished.
In the continuation of his speech, Özgül stated that the fact that soil is the main element that makes the planet different from other planets and beings can be seen in the adventure of the existence of the universe. He said that while the only intelligent being called human being provided its first needs from the soil and increased its generation, it used the soil both as a means of production and as an element of colonisation for the needs of the multiplying human beings.
Prof. Dr. Özgül emphasised that the level of the relationship of this age, which is claimed to be modern, with the soil is worse than the ancient age, and in this sense, the story of all civilisations from the beginning to the present day has been shaped by soil and therefore agriculture, and that the sustainability of civilisations will be possible with the continuity of soil existence, and emphasised the importance of all layers of society to adopt the perception of soil as the basis of cultural existence with a new and universal perspective in order to create this phenomenon.
Prof. Dr. Müdahir Özgül concluded his speech by thanking Atatürk University Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hacımüftüoğlu, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Prof. Dr. Önder Çalmaşur and all participants who contributed to the organisation of the event.
After the event, the participants took a walk of respect for the soil and visited the Agricultural Museum of the Faculty of Agriculture.
