PROJECT COMPARING HORSESHOE ISLAND LAKES AND GLACIAL LAKES IN ERZURUM RECEIVED SUPPORT FROM TUBITAK

Assoc. Dr. Özden Fakıoğlu's project proposal "Examination of the Phytoplankton Structure of Glacial Lakes in Different Climates, Latitudes and Longitudes with Conventional and Metagenomic Analysis: An Example of Horseshoe Island Lakes in Antarctica and a Glacial Lake in Turkey" was awarded support within the scope of TÜBİTAK Pole 1001 Call. It became one of 10 projects.

Faculty members of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Medine Güllüce, Assist. Prof. Gökçe Karadayı and Assist. Prof. Mehmet Karadayı from Ankara University and Prof. Dr. A. Nilsun Demir took part in the project. Within the scope of the project, a comparative evaluation of the phytoplankton biodiversity between the Horseshoe Island lakes and the glacial lakes in Erzurum will be made within the scope of the TAE-7 scientific expedition to Antarctica, one of the most important cold habitats of the world.

The project will contribute to the understanding and modeling of global climate change processes

Emphasizing the importance of the project, which is the first study to be carried out on behalf of our country in the Antarctic continent, Assoc. Dr. Özden Fakıoğlu said: “Our study, which is the subject of the project, will provide important data on the effects of climate change within the scope of the National Polar Science Program. In addition, the results obtained will be the first literature and metagenome data of the phytoplankton groups of the region. The change in biodiversity in glacial lakes in different latitude and longitude regions will give us information about the effects of global warming."

Rector Çomaklı: "Science atmosphere and scientific infrastructure at our university has significantly strengthened"

Emphasizing that the primary duty of academics is to carry out scientific studies as well as to carry out educational activities, Atatürk University Rector Prof. Dr. Ömer Çomaklı said: “The scientific atmosphere and scientific infrastructure of our university has been considerably strengthened with the studies we have carried out after the New Generation Design and Transformation Project. Today, Atatürk University is taking firm steps towards becoming one of the world universities with its increasing number of publications, projects and patents. Due to the project, which has been conducted in line with this purpose and will allow us to see the place of our country in the global warming process. I would like to thank the project coordinator Assoc. Dr. Özden Fakıoğlu and the entire project team and hope that the results will contribute to science.”
