ATA-OGEM CENTER OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

Atatürk University Teaching and Learning Development Application and Research Centre (ATA-ÖGEM) continues its successful work with successful projects and events for lecturers.

ATA-ÖGEM, which was established in 2019 within the scope of the New Generation University Design and Transformation Project, aims to increase the quality of education by sharing practical applications with faculty members and graduate students since its establishment. Providing support to academics who want to improve their teaching skills for face-to-face and distance education, the centre also aims to provide a more effective learning environment for academics with its technological and pedagogical seminar activities for teaching staff.

Focusing on creating an institutional climate that supports excellence in teaching and learning since its establishment, ATA-ÖGEM carries out many synchronous and asynchronous activities by contributing to the development of teaching and learning processes at the university level by emphasising student-oriented strategies and innovations in education.

Face-to-Face Seminars for Lecturers

ATA-ÖGEM, which has brought together 12 different types of face-to-face seminars lasting approximately 24 hours, including trainings such as measurement and evaluation methods, instructional design and syllabus preparation, use of technology in education, communication and human relations in the classroom, with academics at Atatürk University since its establishment, carries out its seminar activities, which are completely face-to-face, in a planned and regular manner until the pandemic period.

Certificate Programmes Supporting Face-to-Face and Distance Education

ATA-ÖGEM conducts two main certificate programmes asynchronously, namely academic development and distance teaching certificate programmes, which support diversity in education and contribute to the continuous development of instructors. These programmes, which support face-to-face and distance education, aim to provide the skills and knowledge required by academics in today's dynamic educational environment.

These certificate programmes aim to support academics' technological and pedagogical skills and develop effective teaching strategies. Designed to enable academics to be effective in face-to-face, distance and blended education environments, the programmes include applications of technology-supported teaching. It also focuses on developing student-centred teaching methods and skills to understand and manage different learning styles. For academics who want to learn about innovative methods and best practices in face-to-face, distance and blended education, these programmes offer solutions to meet the changing needs in education. Atatürk University faculty members can access the certificate programmes at ‘ogem.atauni.edu.tr/sertifika’.

Seminars on Transition to Distance Teaching...

Atatürk University Teaching and Learning Development Application and Research Centre (ATA-ÖGEM) supports educators with seminars given by experts and increases their knowledge on distance teaching, which has gained more and more importance recently. These seminars plan to strengthen digital teaching skills by enabling educators to better understand and effectively use distance education systems.

The seminars, which address topics such as the introduction of distance education systems, effective course design, material preparation and evaluation in distance education, offer practical information for the needs of educators. In this way, educators who want to adapt their teaching processes to the online environment have the opportunity to learn and apply current and effective methods.

These comprehensive seminars organised by ATA-ÖGEM make significant contributions to the professional development of educators. At the same time, it creates a platform for disseminating innovations and best practices in the sector by promoting quality information sharing in the field of education. These seminars help educators improve the quality of teaching and reach students more effectively.

Scientific Projects and International Cooperation

ATA-ÖGEM; With the projects submitted to the European Union, TÜBİTAK and Scientific Research Projects (BAP) Unit, it is not only limited to the university where it is located, but also carries out activities in national and international fields. The activities carried out in line with the mission of spreading the project culture to be carried out in national and international fields, which is among the most important outputs of Atatürk University's New Generation Design and Transformation Project, are gradually increasing.

THEE - Through the Eyes of a Good Teacher

The project titled ‘Improving Teaching Techniques with Eye Movement Tracking’, in which ATA-ÖGEM is a stakeholder, was entitled to receive support from the European Union within the scope of ERASMUS+ ‘Key Action 2 Higher Education Area Strategic Partnerships (KA203)’ in 2019.

The project, coordinated by Sabancı University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Kürşat Çağıltay and involving Italy Salerno University, Lithuania Vilnius University, ATA-ÖGEM, Belgium UNICA and Dama Sistem Company (METU Teknokent) as partners, was supported with a budget of 282,618 Euros and lasted 33 months.

Within the scope of THEE project, which aims to develop a system for academics in Turkey and Europe to teach more effectively, the eye movements of academics in Turkey and Europe are recorded and analysed by eye tracking devices while they are lecturing in classrooms.

Academics were informed about better management of the classrooms and more effective lecturing with the support of technology by using the data collected from their own eyes. In this way; inexperienced academics examined classroom management through the eyes of experienced academics, mistakes made while lecturing were evaluated and awareness was raised about the effects of active use of smart boards and similar technological equipment in the classroom.

BAP Supported Projects

ATA-ÖGEM also carries out various project activities to develop and support the learning processes of academic staff within the scope of Atatürk University. In this context, face-to-face and online training activities are organised by the centre. Face-to-face trainings enable lecturers to share knowledge and experience in interactive environments and also support interactive learning methods. Online training activities, on the other hand, aim to improve the face-to-face and distance education skills of academic staff through the effective use of digital technologies.

TUBITAK Supported Seminars for Academicians

ATA-ÖGEM organises seminars supported by TÜBİTAK BİDEB (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) in order to support academics' research and scientific studies. The seminars, which include topics such as Academic Counselling Training, Blended Teaching Practices, Learning Process Improvement Practices, Writing Research Projects and Scientific Article Writing Training, offer academics the opportunity to follow current developments in their fields and to carry their own studies to a higher level.

The seminars, supported by TÜBİTAK, are organised with the participation of expert speakers in various fields of science. The seminars offer academics the chance to learn about leading research groups and the latest technologies and methodologies in their fields, while also providing the opportunity to expand their academic networks. Thousands of national and international academics have contributed to thousands of national and international academics with more than 15 TÜBİTAK-supported seminars given so far.

ATA-ÖGEM on Social Media

ATA-ÖGEM also uses social media effectively to reach the masses and increase information sharing. In particular, the training videos shared on the YouTube channel enable interaction with a wide audience. These videos include techniques used in education, innovative teaching methods and best practices, as well as recordings of all asynchronous and synchronous online trainings provided within the institution. ATA-ÖGEM's Youtube channel aims to increase the quality of education by guiding academics. The YouTube channel has appealed to a wide audience by receiving over 150 thousand impressions and reaching approximately 3 thousand subscribers in the last 5 years.
