Ataturk University Rector Prof. Dr. Ömer Çomaklı published a message on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of the 17 August 1999 Marmara Earthquake. Rector Çomaklı made the following statements in his message:

“The climate and nature-related disasters we have been experiencing lately show how valuable the resources we thought would never end, and how close we were to the disasters we thought impossible. The helplessness we experience in the face of natural disasters reminds us of human helplessness over and over again.

1999 Marmara Earthquake showed how long 45 seconds is and how short a human life is. It left behind thousands of lives lost, cities destroyed and lives that will never be the same.

While we pray that Almighty Allah will not test us with such disasters again, we commemorate every soul we lost with sadness.”
