PEDALLING TO HISTORY: MEANINGFUL MEETING AT ÇOBANDEDE REDOUBT
The "we are pedalling to History" event, which was organised to highlight Erzurum's historical heritage and to unite nature and sports devotees, was met with enthusiastic participation. The Erzurum Governorship, in collaboration with Atatürk University and the Macera Off-Road Nature Sports Club, coordinated the event, which featured a route that was interwoven with nature and history. The route included both cycling and equestrian riding.
The event was attended by a number of students and nature enthusiasts, as well as Erzurum Governor Mustafa Çiftçi, Atatürk University Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hacımüftüoğlu, Erzurum Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Ahmet Yer, Macera Off-Road President Lokman Toptaş and his team, Manege Area and Horse Riding Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökhan Öztürk and unit employees, and many others.
During the initial phase of the event, the participants rode bicycles to complete the approximately 5-kilometer track. Subsequently, equestrian divisions participated in the 6-kilometer course. The event concluded at Çobandede Fort, which is renowned for its historical significance and as one of the highest defence points in Erzurum.
"We Unite Our Historical Sites with Sports"
The participants' voyage was interwoven with the historical and natural texture of the city, resulting in a unique experience that combined the traces of history with nature activities. This significant event was held at Çobandede Fort, which was constructed to combat Russian attacks during the tenure of Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II. The fort is renowned as the most dominant location in Erzurum, with an elevation of 2,453 meters.
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hacımüftüoğlu, the President of Atatürk University, made the following statements in his evaluation of the event: "We participated as a university in the 'We are pedalling to History' event, which was organised under the leadership of our Governorship at Çobandede Bastion, one of the historical heritages of Erzurum." We sought to ensure that our historical structures are not overlooked and to attract attention to the tourism potential of our city by engaging in this significant organisation with our cyclists, paragliding, and off-road teams. At Atatürk University, we are committed to enhancing the value of our city in academic, cultural, and social terms. I am of the opinion that these events are crucial in the development of historical awareness among our youth and in the promotion of the distinctive heritage of Erzurum. We, as a university, operate with this comprehension; we persist in our endeavours by adopting a comprehensive approach that encompasses science, culture, history, and athletics.
The participants' enthusiastic and sensitive participation in the event, which was successfully concluded, not only contributed to the promotion of Erzurum's historical structures but also provided the enjoyment of sports in harmony with nature. Participants preserved the memory of the day by capturing memento photographs in the historical and natural setting at the conclusion of the event.
